Raising a motherless kitten - Taking on the mother role

Normally kittens have their environmental and nutritional requirements met by their mother. However, a number of different situations can cause the kitten to need additional care, such as death or rejection of the mother, poor health of the mother, or a litter that is too large for the mother to be able to adequately care for her kittens.
