Dogs and Cats in Corona Times
Even in Corona times, pet precaution is very important
"Are you open normally?" has been the most frequently asked question by pet owners in recent weeks. Veterinary practices and clinics are among the systemically important facilities in the Covid crisis. "Medical care for pets is guaranteed at all times," says Ms Andrea Kamm, veterinarian and regional manager at VetTrust AG, the largest veterinary group in Switzerland with over 25 locations.
However, many owners are very reluctant to visit the vet. "The worries are unfounded," describes Boris Rapp, managing director of VetTrust. "We generally organise visits to our practices without contact and have implemented a comprehensive covid protection concept."
It is important that animals are regularly examined and cared for, even if there are no symptoms of disease. This concerns, on the one hand, the annual vaccinations, but also precautions against worms and ticks, so-called endo- and ectoparasites. "We notice that owners are currently skipping these important visits," says Kamm.
The visit to the vet also serves as a general examination of the animals. Many chronic diseases known to humans also exist in animals. These are, for example, chronic kidney diseases, thyroid problems or a blood sugar disorder.
For several years now, VetTrust has been offering a so-called health check from January to March, where pet owners can have their dog or cat completely examined at a discounted price. This includes a comprehensive blood and urine analysis. "This has already enabled us to detect and treat numerous diseases at an early stage. In addition, early detection can avoid medically complex and usually expensive late complications," explains Andrea Kamm.
Pet owners should therefore also pay attention to the medical care of their pet in Corona times.
